Navy, army NatIoNaL guarD,
2000 and their third child, Sarah
Katheryn, was born in August
of 2002. While working with the
congregation in Huntsville, Carl
decided to continue military
service by enlisting in the
Alabama Army National Guard
with a communications unit. The
day he swore into the Alabama
Army National Guard was the
morning of September 11, 2001.
The swearing in ceremony was
disrupted by individuals saying
that everyone needed to “come
right now” to watch the news.
Late in 2002, Carl and his family
moved to Selma, Alabama where
Carl worked with the Houston
Interim’s care team

with the Army National Guard
attached to the local logistics unit
where he became the Chaplain
Assistant. During this time, Carl
was deployed in support of
operations in Iraq, where, due
to some background in Biblical
Archaeology, he was given
the collateral duty of being the
liaison to the Iraqi Department
of Antiquity, allowing him to
visit several ancient sites. The
base Carl operated from was
within sight of the ruins of
Ur (the original homeland of
Abraham), and he personally
gave over one hundred tours
to USO entertainers and VIPs

Iraq
passing through the area of
operation. Upon returning to
the United States, Carl had
the opportunity to lecture on
the history and ruins of Ur at
several universities. Also, during
Carl’s time in Selma, he taught
Bible at Meadowview Christian
Academy and earned an MA
in Secondary Education from
Grand Canyon University.
After eight years of serving the
Houston Park congregation, Carl
accepted the minister position
with the Carteret Road Church
of Christ in Brunswick, Georgia.
