WORLD WAR II
construction of the famous Twin Buttes Dam . When
finished, the dam was eight miles across, 134 feet
high and helped to ensure water for the people of San
Angelo.
Howard and his wife Alma first lived out of motel
rooms but graduated to a trailer they pulled from site
to site. As their family grew, their trailer also grew.
He, along with Alma and daughter Linda, came to
Amarillo to work on the city reservoir system. There,
he put down roots. His wife passed away after 47
years of marriage. Howard retired and eventually
settled in the Clairmont Assisted Living Home.
However, love was not over for Howard. At the age of
92, he found a new companion, Ruth, and remarried.
Throughout all the trials in his life, from working
in a salt mine in the Mojave Desert to serving in
wartime to losing a spouse, he continues to embrace
life. Though modest and unassuming, Howard Sliger
demonstrates the character so often found in his
generation.
