exposed to louder sounds. Many in the military
were exposed to all of the factors: loud sudden
noises, sirens, constant sounds over the 85 dB,
even chemicals - especially mechanics, pilots and
             infantrymen.

Other factors can cause damaging effects on our
hearing as well. More than 200 medications can
be ototoxic (causing hearing nerve damage) and
should be avoided or substituted. Research has
revealed that over-the-counter pain relievers can
cause hearing loss in women, and chemotherapy
can be a factor in both genders. When a course
of medication is necessary for one’s health, it
is advisable to have a hearing screening before
and after to note any changes. Smoking can also
             damage hearing nerves.
You can take precautions today to protect your
hearing and salvage the hearing you still have.
Be aware of the noises you are exposed to. The
most important thing to realize is that hearing
loss is PREVENTABLE. Always be aware of
the level of noise in your surroundings. Ear
protectors, like muffs or earplugs, can help.
Custom-made earplugs are best at sealing out
loud noises. Always move away from the source
of the noise and lower the volume.
Hearing devices alone are not the complete
answer. It takes time with your hearing health
professional to get them adjusted and best
functioning for your lifestyle. We say THANK
