three great-grandchildren. Cleatus is highly respected
by everyone who knows him, but he sees himself as
“just a regular old man.” His greatest accomplishment
is "marrying Joan."

Joan is “very proud of him” and says his greatest
strength is his “faith in God.” He offers this wisdom for
younger generations. “Stay away from dope, tobacco
and alcohol. Mind your parents. Go to church. Be kind
to everyone.”

Cleatus’ entry in the book Only 317 Survived! concludes
with these words: “Survivor Jimmy O’Donnell said
relive it for the sake of truth. He still has bad dreams, it very well, ‘Don’t ever give up.’ I am going to add,
but the nearly 75 years he has lived since have given ‘Remember who can go with you.’”
