fact, the hearse and funeral home
              provided several episodes of “boys
              will be boys” remembrances.
After law school, Bill joined his dad
at the firm. In his first official case,
he was appointed to represent a
defendant in a criminal trial. It was
rather daunting to stand and speak
              before twelve people whom he
knew, but it launched his career as a
              trial lawyer.
Judge was engaged to be the
attorney for First National Bank in
Plainview and serve on the Board
of Directors. When Bill was later
placed on the board, Judge said,
“Keep your mouth shut. I’ll explain To purchase: contact Ted Wilson at tedwilson@minister.com. The price is
everything later.” And that’s how $10 (+$2 for shipping).
              Bill learned the banking business.

Bum Bright died in December 2004.
Bill’s wife, Ellie, died three months
later in March 2005. During that summer, Bill
was in Dallas, and Peggy was invited to have
dinner with Bill and others. It was the spark that
rekindled a flame after nearly 50 years. Bill and
Peggy were married in December of 2005. They are
a couple who have deep faith and generosity. They
support two congregations, Texas Tech, Wayland
              Baptist University, scholarships for Plainview
High students, and a few years ago, were the major
donors for Wayland’s Steinway program for the
music department. Peggy said that when one is
blessed with resources, they must be shared. A
Tuesday morning Bible study takes place in their
home, and Peggy is a prayer warrior whom we all
              count on.
Peggy didn’t give birth to any children but has
given herself to nine “step”children. The Lord
knew she would have enough children. Health
issues found Bill and Peggy being cared for at the
Carillon for several weeks during the Covid 19
season. And when time and conditions warrant,
they will retire to the villa they own at Carillon.
They recently found a note that Judge LaFont had
written. “You don’t know about marriage until
after fifteen years.” Peggy said, “We made it!”
